An Inspiring and Fruitful 2024 GMD Career Event

Alice Tosolini, on behalf of the GMD Student Board

On Wednesday, 15 May, the GMD Student Board had the pleasure of hosting an insightful and engaging Career Event at ISS. The event brought together speakers from academia and governmental and non-governmental organisations, particularly the IND and European Migration Network, the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment and the Municipality of The Hague, and the NGO "La Strada."

The speakers, among which some GMD alumni, shared their experiences of transitioning from student to work life, giving tips on the job search and interviewing process, reflecting on the 9 to 5 schedule, the networking process, and the relations with colleagues and people they strive to help. They also offered many valuable insights on discovering which topics you are really interested in, how to stand out for the position you are applying for, and how to make the best of the skills acquired in university. Some recurring advice? Don't be afraid to try out a lot of things in order to understand what you are passionate about; your drive and enthusiasm will make a difference!

The GMD students had the opportunity to ask specific questions and dive deeper into the aspects they were most curious about, sparking compelling collective reflections. These discussions continued at ISS's Butterfly Bar, where informal drinks were organised after the event.

As the Student Board, we were thrilled to see the event's success and the valuable input it offered students. We are grateful to the speakers for sharing their experiences and thoughts and to GMD project officer Alex for his invaluable support in organising the event.

We hope that GMD students feel inspired and reassured and will feel more confident and well-equipped to navigate their career paths after the end of the Masters.
