2024 GMD Conference - Closing Keynote with Łukasz Szulc

At the 2024 LDE GMD Conference, we will not only explore the Governance of Migration and Diversity through the historical lens. By looking into the past and present, we aim to set an agenda and inspire future research directions. We are delighted to announce our closing keynote with Łukasz Szulc (University of Manchester), which sheds light on the topic of queer migration and illuminates the intersectionality and interdisciplinary approach to future migration and diversity research.

Swiping Across Borders: Queer Migrants, Agency and Sad Dating Apps

Dr Łukasz Szulc's (University of Manchester) talk focuses on Polish LGBTQ+ people in the UK and their experiences on dating apps. Based on interviews, his research challenges popular and scientific reports that inherently link dating app cultures to atomization, dependency, and sadness. Centering on agency and emotion, his work focuses on immigrant users who are not privileged in other conversations about online dating. By doing so, he nuances the role of digital technology in society and culture.
